Thanks to Naomi and Jim McCafferty, who were kind enough to share them with us, we recently perused a couple of copies of Shunga from 1936 and 37.
Jim relates that Shunga is Lakota for “Mustang,” which was the Whitney High School mascot and the name of the school yearbooks published in the 1920s and 1930s.
We’re using a few excerpts from some of these publications. It appears that at least 13 editions were printed -- perhaps more -- and we’ve seen two: Volume I Number 8 from May of 1936 and Volume II Number 5 from January of 1937.
The May 1936 volume is particularly interesting, since it was dedicated to “the early settlers of Whitney” and contained a few offset photographs of the graduating seniors. It also had an alumni register from 1925 through 1935
