Many people may think that girls basketball came of age in the 1970s and 1980s; fact is, it was popular in the 1920s, as evidenced by this front page advertisement for the Whitney-Rushville girls basketball game on March 12, 1927. While it was billed as the “last game our girls will ever play with another school,” that was attributable more to school size than lack of interest in girls sports. The gymnasium was located in the basement of the school, which still stands on the northwest edge of Whitney. Unfortunately, we don’t know who won that final game.
