Whitney Reflections

A tribute to the early settlers of a western Nebraska village

Red Cloud Refinery Calendar Old Connell Oil Company

The Red Cloud Refinery operated filling stations in Crawford and Whitney.  In 1946, they produced the calender shown at left.  In 1953, Bob and Ruth Ann Connell bought the Whitney station.  It was something of a landmark in downtown Whitney at the corner of Missouri and Division Streets.  Before selling the business to Dale and Regina Mahan in 1969, the Connells added a bulk plant.  Mahans built on an addition with service doors on the east end of the building.  Previously, the air hoist had been out of doors.  The Mahans were the last to operate the facility as a service station.  Our thanks to Bob and Ruth Ann Connell for providing some background about the business -- and to Chadron, Nebraska  artist Kit Watson for allowing us to use her wonderful pen and pencil sketch of the  old building.
